I don’t think our work was considered if you handed it in late without discussing why with your professor first. I do remember that after my father died during my second year at uni my teachers did everything they possibly could so I could take some time out and still do all my exams and write my papers. I never felt the system at our uni was unfair.

You could suggest to your landlord to invest in this if you haven’t. It won’t stop people breaking in, but if it takes too much time for them to get to what they want, they might leave your apartment alone in future.
